Susan M. Barman recipient of the 2020 Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award of the American Physiological Society has been honoured for her outstanding contributions to physiological research and demonstrated dedication and commitment to excellence in training of young physiologists.

Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen, Danish born, American physiologist born to Nobel Laureate August Krogh and Marie Krogh was elected the first woman president of the American Physiological Society in 1975. After serving as Chair, Physiology at Case Western University, Professor Schmidt-Nielsen served the MDI Biological Laboratory in its mission to improve human health and well-being through basic research, education, and development in ventures that transform discoveries into cures.

Susan Barman has been a distinguished recipient in 2019 of the MSU William J Beal Outstanding Faculty Award of the Michigan State University and the 2019 Carl Ludwig Distinguished Lectureship of the APS Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Section of the American Physiological Society.
