IUPS - Who we are

The International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) is a Not-for-Profit collective of physiological societies from all corners of the globe, founded in 1953. IUPS works to champion physiology without borders and to remove political barriers from physiologists interacting.

IUPS activities are based on teamwork

The General Assembly, consisting of delegates nominated by adhering bodies and their supporting societies, convenes every four years at the IUPS Congress to elect the leadership and to decide about the aims and actions of IUPS. It elects the members of the IUPS Council as well as the President, two Vice Presidents, the Treasurer, and the Secretary General, who form the Executive Committee (supported by the IUPS Manager). The Board of the General Assembly is a 15-person group authorized by the GA to act on its behalf between meetings of the full GA. It is also tasked with producing a report to the GA detailing the current status of the field of physiology world-wide, emphasizing major challenges, opportunities, and problems.

Together, these active physiologists work on promoting and representing physiology on the international scene, enable communication between physiologists and with the public worldwide, and (co-)organizing scientific meetings publications and events.

Mission & Vision

IUPS is a non-political and non-geographical scientific organization representing more than 60 physiological societies worldwide. Together with national societies, IUPS promotes physiology as a valuable scientific discipline, emphasizing its relevance to medicine and  global health.

IUPS serves physiologists worldwide by supporting a communication platform that allows international exchange between scientists and scientific societies and fosters global networking of physiologists to support the development of regional infrastructures to improve physiological research and teaching.

Our vision for physiology is to be an excellent and well renowned scientific discipline which is an indispensable constituent of modern medicine and public health, attracting the best scientists worldwide.

Our History

Founded in 1953, IUPS has been bringing together national physiological societies from around the world for more than 70 years to advance vital knowledge about biological systems.

What must be said

IUPS stands for a clear profile, supporting careful scientific conduct, freedom of science, an open world, and diversity. Therefore, IUPS is publishing its own statements and those of member societies which support our values.

IUPS Stands Against Racism

IUPS condemns systemic racism, discrimination, injustice, and violence. The mission of the IUPS is to “foster the study of physiology worldwide.” We are committed to eliminate inequality in access to resources, research, and development of Physiologists worldwide regardless of color, sex, gender, socioeconomic background or geographical location.

We must reflect, educate ourselves, and fight for institutional change to ensure all individuals are granted respect, opportunities, and resources to strengthen our scientific pursuit. Our educational workshops in the developing world and travel grants to early career physiologists are some of the actions reflecting our commitment. IUPS is committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, empathy and respect in all endeavors to advance scientific achievement and excellence.
