IUPS - Academy of Physiology

The Academy will represent the diversity and excellence of worldwide physiology. As an international non-political organization, IUPS is the only body that represents the entire community of physiological researchers, teachers, and students.

IUPS is proud of its Academy of Physiology, launched in 2021.

Our mission is to advance physiological research and teaching and its translation into benefits for health and society. To achieve our mission, we have started forming an Academy.

 Call for nominations 2026

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 election of 30 Fellows of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) Academy. The deadline for applications is March, 15th, 2026.

With only 30 Fellows elected each year, Fellowship is an honour. The criteria are that the successful candidates will have made exceptional contributions to physiological sciences, in the form of significant original discovery, sustained contributions to scholarship, or in other ways will have rendered a conspicuous service to physiology internationally. As an international organisation, we will take account of geographical variations in resources and opportunities.

Background

The IUPS Academy was launched in 2021 to celebrate and publicise the important contributions made by physiologists to science and health, when we welcomed three Honorary Fellows (Hon FIUPS) (note: 7 as of now) and 30 Fellows (FIUPS) into the academy. Further cohorts of fellows were welcomed in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. A list of these Fellows can be found below

Candidates must be proposed and seconded, and the following information provided on the attached application form:

1. A cover sheet with

The name, institutional address, email address, job title and field of the candidate. The name, email address and signature of the proposer and seconder.

The proposer is responsible for submitting the completed application. The proposer must have the consent of their candidate.

2. A 500-word citation outlining the case for election, heeding the criteria, and referring to the candidate’s ‘10 Key Papers’ document and ‘CV’.

3. List of 10 key publications with PubMed links.

4. Full list of peer reviewed publications.

5. Brief CV, no more than 3 pages, Arial font, size 11. Candidates should prioritise the information they provide to indicate how they meet the Fellowship criteria.

Proposers should send their nominations via email to Laura Davies (laura.davies@iups.org)

with the subject, ‘Fellow Nomination for IUPS Academy’, followed by the name of the candidate. Please ensure you have a personalised (non-automated) acknowledgement in receipt of your emailed proposal to Laura.

The deadline for applications is March, 15th 2026.

Selection

All nominations will be judged by the IUPS Fellowship task force, based on the criteria outlined above. They will also pay attention to geographical balance.

This group is:

Professor Yoshihiro Kubo (Chair)(Japan), President of IUPS

Professor Susan Wray (UK), Former President of IUPS

Professor William Jackson (USA), IUPS Council

Professor El Wazir Yasser (Egypt), IUPS Council & FIUPS

Professor Robyn Murphy (Australia), FIUPS

Professor Sergio Lavandero (Chile), FIUPS

The task force will make its recommendation to the IUPS Executive Committee, which will make the final decision and ratify the list of successful fellows.

Can candidates self-nominate? No. They need to be proposed and seconded.

Candidates are free to approach potential proposers.

Is anybody ineligible for nominations? Yes. Current IUPS Council and Board of General Assembly (BGA) members, and their families, are ineligible.

Who can be a proposer? Anyone can be a proposer, they do not have to be associated with a national society.

Can societies propose candidates? Acting as individuals, any society officer can propose candidates, but nominations should not be from, or in the name of, national societies.

Can a proposer submit multiple proposals? Yes – but this is not encouraged.

Who submits the paperwork? The proposer should submit the paperwork.

What is the deadline? 28th February 2026.

Who do I send the completed paperwork to? Laura Davies at laura.davies@iups.org.

When will successful candidates be informed? May 2026.

When will the 2025 Fellows be announced? June 2026.

Will unsuccessful candidates be informed? Yes, via the proposer/seconder.

Can unsuccessful candidates reapply? Yes. The former rule—“Names of unsuccessful candidates will be carried forward for four more election rounds, so there is no need to reapply”—was changed in 2026. Under the new rule, candidates must reapply after each unsuccessful election round. After three unsuccessful rounds, fellows are not eligible for nomination for the next three rounds.

Who do I contact if I have a query? Please contact either Ms Laura Davies,

(laura.davies@iups.org) or Professor Yoshihiro Kubo (IUPS President) (ykubo@nips.ac.jp)

Can retired people be nominated? Yes. Retired people can be nominated.

The Academy is composed of IUPS Honorary Fellows (Hon FIUPS) and Fellows (FIUPS).

Our highest honour is that of Honorary Fellow. This is to those physiologists who have been awarded worldwide recognition and acclaim, such a recipients of the Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Vision for the Academy

Our vision for the Academy is that it will be a resource for physiologists. In addition, it will be a source of information and contacts for journalists, funders, charities, politicians, allied health professionals or members of the public.

In consultation with the Fellows of The Academy, the IUPS Council will authorize statements for politicians and the press. Statement topics might include animal research, the significance of physiology, and, the reproducibility and integrity of biomedical data, and its importance to drug development and clinical trials.

The Academy will be a natural home for consensus papers on good practice in physiological research.

IUPS fellows (FIUPS)

The IUPS academy consists in addition to our honorary  fellows of annually elected Fellows (FIUPS). These will signify physiologists and allied professionals, who have made exceptional contributions to physiological sciences. This can be in the form of significant original discovery, sustained excellent contributions to scholarship, or (exceptionally) those who in other ways have rendered a conspicuous service to physiology.

We will have an annual call for proposals for elected Fellows. Membership will be limited to 30 new FIUPS each year.

IUPS welcomes the support our FIUPS can bring.

These FIUPS and Hon FIUPS  will help shape development of the IUPS Academy. Their advice on the best strategy and approaches for us to deliver on this vision for the benefit of the international physiological community is key to the Academy’s success.

The expertise and talents of our Academy Fellows can help IUPS, by consulting on specific IUPS activities and projects.

IUPS Awards

IUPS is offering lecture awards for established researchers (presented as named lectures at the IUPS congresses) and travel awards primarily for physiologists in an early phase of their career.
